Affordable Housing Beyond the Scope of Government

Rachel Alembakis, a special contributor to Probono's Not for Podcast, in the podcast "Affordable Housing Beyond the Scope of Government" suggests that governmental support for new affordable housing is not enough and that private capital is needed to meet the needs of Australians. Alembakis develops this message by using quotes from director of impact investing at Social Ventures Australia (SVA), Mark Peacock who makes the argument that private capital can meet the long term investment needs of affordable housing development.

Alembakis does not preclude the involvement; however, she uses the quotes of experts to demonstrate that government should not play a leading role in building affordable housing for Australians instead it should play the role of "facilitator". This is an important issues, one which all of the major political parties in Australia agree need to be tackled. Ultimately, argues Alembakis, there needs to be a holistic approach to the affordable housing crisis in Australia- one where private capital and government work together.
