When Edgar Schein, social psychologist, joined MIT's Sloan School of Management in the 1950s, the school had just introduced its teaching management methods through formal disciplines like math, social psychology, economics, and history. That was a departure from "the practice of management" through cases taught by professors who had been managers for most of their careers.
The new approach established collaborations and innovative thinking about leadership, group cultures, and organizational change. It was in this moment that Ed and his colleagues undertook what he calls "an exciting quarter century of model building."
In the new era of digital transformation, Ed states that it's time for a new model built on professional relationships, openness, and trust.
