"I believe our community needs to come together, not only for these instances, but to prevent these instances." That's the message from Pastor Darrell Boyce of San Antonio, Texas, after his 19-year-old son was shot dead last Thursday, the San Antonio Express-News reports.
Darrell Boyce's son, Avante, was in the parking lot of an apartment complex when he was shot multiple times. Police say he ran to a nearby apartment complex in an attempt to escape, but collapsed when he realized what had happened. Police say Avante was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death was a "tipping point" for Bennie Price, CEO of Big Mama's Safe House, which works with teens and young adults on the city's east side. Price tells the Express-News he plans to start holding weekly community meetings in the wake of Avante's death.
"The community will start familiarizing with each other, and also the youth [will be] familiarizing with each other so they won't be treating each other like the enemy," he says.
