One of the nation's largest health care systems, Dignity Health, is providing a $150,000 grant to CSH, the Corporation for Supportive Housing, to provide up to fifty affordable rental units in Las Vegas, NV.
The aim is to house homeless individuals who heavily utilize emergency services at three area hospitals. Supportive housing has shown success in other cities to address homelessness and to reduce "super-utilization" of emergency rooms. CHS will partner with the hospitals to identify individuals most in need of housing in order to improve their health outcomes as well as lowering the costs to providers.
Providing chronically homeless super-utilizers with stability and access to regular medical care is expected to far less expensive for the hospitals. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that there are approximately 1000 chronically homeless individuals in Nevada, the majority of whom are in Las Vegas.
