United Way of Greater Knoxville's grant-making process reflects this new reality as board of directors approved 2012-13 grant allocations that gave $7.8 million to fund 97 programs managed by 42 partner agencies.
Incoming board chair Tommy Schmid said that as programs in financial stability and health switch to the new competitive grant process, United Way volunteers will scrutinize the grant proposals to ensure the programs meet outcome-based criteria. Those grants will then transition from one-year to three-year grants.
