First Class of Public Spaces Fellows Annouced by Knight Foundation

Foundation: Knight Foundation

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on fostering community in service of democratic ideals, announces its first class of Knight Public Spaces Fellows and providing each a $150,000 grant to put towards building effective public space initiatives across the United States.

The grant recipients were selected over 2,000 hopeful candidates. According to Sam Gill, the Knight Foundation vice president for communities and impact, describing the individuals recognized in this inaugural class, said that the chosen Public Spaces Fellows are rare people and they "see something different when they look at streets, parks, and sidewalks - they see a vision of how communities could look, feel, and be different."

The seven grant recipients include: Anuj Gupta (Philadelphia), Robert Hammond (New York), Walter Hood (Berkeley, California), Eric Klinenberg (New York), Chelina Odbert (Los Angeles), Kathryn Ott Lovell (Philadelphia), and Erin Salazar (San Jose, California).
