When Henry Samueli and his wife, Susan, decided to open a charter school in Orange County, Calif., 20 years ago, they were concerned about high school graduation rates among teens in the area, including those in foster care.
Now, the Samueli Academy has 775 students in its first year and plans to open its doors to students in the 7th and 12th grades next year, the Los Angeles Times reports.
"We are seeing students who had no vision of going on to post-secondary education when they first came to Samueli Academy go on to outstanding colleges and universities," Susan Samueli says.
"We are so proud of them and the work our faculty is doing to level the educational field for all of our students."
The Samueli Academy is part of the Orangewood Foundation, which has raised $72 million for the school, which includes a new 7.1-acre campus in Santa Ana, as well as on-campus housing for youth in foster care, per the Orangewood Foundation website.
The Samueli Academy's hands-on, project-based learning approach is designed to teach students lifelong skills including leadership, social responsibility, and collaboration, per the Times.
