Eighteen-year-old Vallery Adhiambo won the top prize in the "Plant Trees, Not Plastics" competition, which asked young people in Eastern and Southern Africa to come up with creative solutions to the problem of plastic waste.

Adhiambo, who lives in Homabay County, Kenya, says she's "very passionate about the environment and works with different groups of people within the community on matters concerning conservation, environmental justice, health, and sanitation."

Her idea is to use calabasha type of plant native to the region as an alternative to plastic, and to share the indigenous traditional knowledge of using it, reports the Guardian.
