More than 100,000 Ukrainians have applied to resettle in the US since the country's civil war broke out in 2014, and more than 40,000 of them have now arrived in New York, the New York Times reports.

The Westchester Jewish Coalition for Immigration, which has received $150,000 in grants to help resettling Ukrainians in the area, says it will use the money to form Welcome Circles to help refugees settle in their new communities.

"We are honored to be able to step up to help the Ukrainian community during this time of immense need," Holly Rosen Fink, co-founder and president of WJCI, says in a press release.

The UJA-Federation of New York is one of several groups funding the Welcome Circles program, which " harnesses the efforts of local agencies and community volunteers, who help individuals or families begin new lives in their community," according to the press release.

The Times notes the US is expected to take in 180,000 Ukrainian refugees over the next year and a half.
