Scientists from seven African countries are coming together in Egypt in November for the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Changeand they're hoping to use the occasion to raise awareness of climate change research on the continent, the Guardian reports.
The paper, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, notes that while Africa contributes "relatively little" to greenhouse gas emissions, "the continent feels the impacts of global warming in many different ways, with changes in hydroclimate, biodiversity, and wildfire dynamics already visible today."
The researchers note that cities in Africa "can take on a leadership role in driving climate change mitigation and adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development," and that the continent can serve as a "model for other parts of the world as they have the potential to adopt disruptive, innovative yet practical solutions to low emissions, resource and resilience building."
