Pittsburgh's public schools are ranked among the best in the country, but a new report from an education advocacy group says there's more to be done.
The A+ Schools' Report to the Community on Public School Progress looked at issues of equity across schools in the city, including chronic absenteeism, low teacher pay, and achievement gaps, reports Pittsburgh Public Radio.
The group says that before the Covid-19 pandemic, chronic absenteeism was common, and it would like schools to address it through a community-based approach, taking into account other concerns such as food, health, and housing.
"I think part of what we're trying to do is help that and navigate that collaboration [with schools], because it's not always easy, the coordination doesn't doesn't happen overnight," says James Fogarty, executive director of A+ Schools.
