"We know the MBTA is woefully understaffedand we know that lack of staffing has had grave consequences," said Maura Healey in her inaugural address Thursday.
The 51-year-old became the state's first openly gay governor and the first woman elected to the office from the state's all-female Democratic ticket when she was sworn in as Charlie Baker's successor, reports the Boston Globe.
"We know the MBTA is woefully understaffedand we know that lack of staffing has had grave consequences," said Healey, who plans to appoint a safety chief to inspect the Boston-area public transit system in the next 60 days.
She also promised to offer free community college to students over 25 who don't have a college degree, reduce the cost of housing by expanding tax breaks, and improve access to child care, reports the New York Times.
"The cost of housing is out of control because we simply don't have enough of it," she said.
"If we want Massachusetts to be a home for all, we need to build more places to live."
