Green Cincinnati Plan Update Focuses on Climate Equity, Sustainability, Innovation, and Engagement

"By the people, for the people," is how Oliver Kroner, director of Cincinnati's Office for Environment and Sustainability, puts it.

The Ohio city is aiming to be "the most sustainable city in the world" by 2023, and Kroner's team has just released a five-year plan to do just that, WCPO reports.

The Green Cincinnati Plan, which will be updated every five years, aims to make the city more energy efficient, more resilient to climate change, and less reliant on fossil fuels, among other things.

"By the people, for the people," Kroner says of the steering committee that worked on the plan, which was submitted to the city by more than 600 residents over the last few years.

The steering committee included organizations focused on health, housing, economic development, sanitation, and food community development, as well as emergency tech policy.

Among the strategies in the Green Cincinnati Plan: more bike paths, more affordable housing, more solar panels, better waste disposal, and more.

The plan also calls for more community involvement in decisions about the environment.

For example, the steering committee heard from residents who were concerned about mold in their homes, as well as those worried about the impact of climate change on their daily lives.
