An Ohio-based company that says it wants to "reclaim former coal mines in the Appalachian region and repurposing them into job-creating, renewable energy projects" has found an unlikely partner: a former congressman from Ohio's 18th District.
Sunday Creek Horizons, a consulting firm led by Zack Space, "will work with Malachite to establish advocacy and government priorities across its various operating businesses by identifying a positive impact on the people-planet ecosystem," per a press release from Malachite Innovations, Inc.
Space, who served in the House from 2011 to 2013, says he believes Malachite is "well-positioned to capitalize on many of the new federal priorities in the energy and environmental space, which stand to provide a positive impact on the people-planet ecosystem."
The press release notes that Sunday Creek Horizons works with "leading private sector businesses, non-profit organizations, institutions of higher learning, and several regional and city governments."
As for what Malachite plans to do with the coal mines, CEO Michael Cavanaugh tells the Athens News-Herald that "there's a lot of potential there," and the company is working with West Virginia's Department of Environmental Protection to figure out how to dispose of the waste in a manner that's "economic, safe, and
