When it comes to giving back to the communities in which it does business, Boeing's philanthropic efforts are a little late to the party.

The company has set a goal of donating $1 billion to communities in the US and around the world by the end of the decade, and it has set a goal to reach $2 billion by the end of this year, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The money will go to groups such as the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and UNICEF, among others.

"We want to make sure we're investing in the right places at the right time," a spokesman for the company's philanthropic arm tells the Journal.

"We want to make sure we're investing in the right people at the right time."

The money will go to groups that help people with HIV, AIDS, and other diseases, as well as to military veterans and their families, the Journal notes.

The Times of London has the full list of Boeing's goals, which include creating a work environment that promotes diversity, reducing the company's environmental impact, and improving people's lives.
