A fire broke out in the basement of a three-story, 77,000-square-foot apartment building in Philadelphia's Chestnut Hill neighborhood early Sunday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
According to WPVI, firefighters responded to a report of a fire around 3am and found a man and a woman unconscious in the basement.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene; the woman died later at a hospital.
The apartment building is located on the site of a former Navy ammunition plant.
The fire was caused by a malfunction in the building's sprinkler system, WPVI reports.
