A Massachusetts nonprofit that provides after-school STEAM programming to kids in low-income housing has been awarded $35,000 in grants over the next decade from the Cummings Foundation.
Merrimack Valley Immigration and Education Center will use the money to expand its summer writing program for students who want to improve their English writing skills, as well as to add a lunch program to reduce food insecurity among those who use its services, reports the Boston Globe.
The second recipient, Si, Se Puede! Inc., will use the money to hire an assistant or contract teachers for its summer program, which includes free educational field trips.
"This means a lot to us since the need for our services is definitely growing, and we plan to expand our facilities in order to serve more people and have a greater impact on the community," MVIEC Executive Director Judy Chmielecki says.
