"Childcare is obviously a very critical issue everywhere in this state, and as the governor mentioned, in order to get people back into the workforce, we need good childcare.
I think as a society, we haven't quite figured out how to fund it best."
That was the message Monday from Wisconsin Gov.
Tony Evers as he cut the ribbon on a new 18,600-square-foot childcare center in Door County that's more than doubling its capacity to care for 150 children, reports Fox 11.
The Door Community Child Development Center was awarded a $3.5 million state grant in 2021 through Evers' $130 million Workforce Innovation Grant Program to make changes to existing child care facilities in the county, reports WTAQ.
The center's new 18,600-square-foot building also includes a community room that can be rented out for classes, birthday parties, and other events, as well as a sensory gym space that can be rented.
The center hopes to increase the number of early childhood educators and find housing for them.
"It's a tough business but this is a wonderful facility and I'm really glad to have it in our community," says Republican Rep.
Joel Kitchens.
As of December 2023, the Door Community Child Development Center was serving 78 kids
