School of Casablanca

"In the twenty-first century, we are again grappling with questions about how to re-contextualize the role and significance of art in society," says the co-director of the School of Casablanca, a new art school in Morocco that's set to open in Berlin in 2020.

The idea is to re-create the 1960s-era Casablanca Art School, which "played a seminal role in these developments with its modern approaches, artistic ideas, and social function," ifa Gallery Berlin says in a press release.

"In doing so, it draws from the spirit of experimentation, discourse, self-organization, and community building," the gallery adds.

The school was founded by Salma Lahlou, who was inspired by the writings of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, the New York Times reports.

The current school is a collaboration between ifa Gallery Berlin, the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, and the Sharjah Art Foundation.

The idea for the school came after a residency program at the school last year.
