When pursuing new housing projects care must be taken to incorporate appropriate infrastructure into the area. New units for owner or renter occupation are good but they must fit into the broader community framework in order to truly become a part of it. Affordable housing is important but what truly makes a neighborhood are amenities such as parks, sidewalks, transit access and efficient utilities.
While the addition of more housing is important an equal focus needs to be placed on sustainability and livability to encourage multiple generations to inhabit and take pride in these new developments. Building with green technologies, taking transportation into account, planning for open space, and zoning areas appropriately can all help to meld new developments into the existing communities.
