Superior, a small town in Nuckolls County, Nebraska, with a population of 1,957, is the winner of this year's Showcase Community Award. The award recognizes exceptional community development efforts and the use of Community Development Block Grants.
The town of Superior has been recognized for different projects over the past five years. Recently, one project was an $8 million expansion of the Brodstone Memorial Hospital.
Then, in 2015, the town started a revitalization of the downtown area and awarded a $30,000 grant. The Community Development Block Grant was used to fund construction of new buildings for the local Casey's General and Dollar General Stores.
Further, other projects went a long way to improving the town. Eleven local small businesses received a face-lift for their facades. Volunteers restored the city auditorium and theater, and a collapsed downtown building was removed.
