"We truly hope that our services and the kids help to transform the lives of the students that we engage with," Dr. Dierdre Roberson says of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) kits he and his wife, Alecia Gabriel, sell to kids in Detroit through the city's Motor City Match program.

Roberson and Gabriel, both Detroit natives, came up with the idea for the monthly subscription box after a visit to a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) store in Chicago, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The kits, which come with everything a child needs to get started with STEAM, are "very cool and technical learning," Roberson says.

Motor City Match, which has given $10.1 million in cash grants to minority-owned businesses in Detroit, aims to get kids excited about science, technology, engineering, and math, the Detroit News reports.

Gabriel and Roberson were one of 30 businesses in the US selected by Target to sell their kits, which are made in-house in Detroit.

"Alecia and Dierdre had it in their hearts to have a business that helps to feed children's natural curiosity and help them learn," Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says.
