Adapting to Climate Change in Africa

Africa is at a "tipping point" when it comes to dealing with climate change, and the UN is calling for "transformative shifts" in how it does business on the continent, the Guardian reports.

"In a world where every economic sector, be it farming or aviation, will need to rethink way it does business, the human power, intellect, and innovative spark of the people of Africa will be the essential driving force behind climate change adaptation on the continent," writes Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, the UN's special envoy for climate change in a blog post.

"The cost of inaction or poorly executed action is simply too high to ignore the problem at hand."

According to Vishnevetsky, Africa is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including droughts, floods, and other natural disasters.

And hunger is on the rise in the continent, with more than one in 10 people undernourished, the BBC reports.

"People are at the center of the climate change equation," Vishnevetsky writes.

"They are the common denominator that connects adaptation with mitigation, and the common driver of human-induced climate change."

To address this, the UN is calling for a new generation of climate change adaptation projects that "connect climate drivers with community development,
