The city of Citrus Heights, Calif., is hoping to use a $10 million state grant to turn an old mall into a modern one.
The Citrus Heights City Council voted unanimously last week to apply for the grant, which would be used to fund infrastructure improvements at the Sunrise Mall site, the Citrus Heights Sentinel reports.
The city's plan is to develop the site into a 2,200-unit residential complex, 480 hotel rooms, 320,000-square-feet of retail, 960,000-square-feet of office, and 450,000-square-feet of community or institutional space.
The first phase of the project, expected to take 20 years, will develop the unused parking areas.
The second phase will likely include office space, retail, dining, and an extended-stay hotel.
