"It was important to the lieutenant governor and me that we take this action immediately because we have no time to delay," said new Massachusetts Gov.
Maura Healey in announcing the creation of an Office of Climate Innovation and Resilience on her first full day in office Friday.
"The climate crisis threatens every aspect of Massachusetts, like our environment, economy, businesses, health, transportation, housing, infrastructure," Healey said, per the Boston Globe.
"Massachusetts can and will be a global leader in the fight against climate change."
The new climate chief, Melissa Hoffer, will be the state's first Cabinet-level climate chief.
Hoffer, who previously worked at the EPA, will review the resources and staffing of all Cabinet secretaries and report back to Healey and Lt.
Gov.
Kim Driscoll within 180 days.
Each cabinet secretary is also required to appoint a climate officer, who will be "responsible for implementing climate-related efforts" within their relevant executive department, per the executive order.
The Globe notes that Massachusetts is one of just four states to have a Cabinet-level climate chief.
