San Diego is getting $45 million from the state to build more than 1,200 affordable homes, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
"Everyone in San Diego deserves a place to call home that they can afford," says Board Chair Eugene Mitchell.
"This state grant will enable us to develop a significant number of new units in the city provide housing solutions for low- and middle-income residents."
The money will go toward two large-scale projects: 1,007 units of two 40-story towers on three parcels land downtown and 586 units on three sites in San Ysidro.
Both have hundreds of affordable housing units ranging from zero to 120% of the city's Area Income Median with varying numbers of units for different income levels at each site.
"Under the leadership of Gov.
Jerry Brown, we will put this funding to work as quickly as possible to build out the community infrastructure necessary to support the creation of nearly 1,200 homes for San Diegans looking for an affordable place to live," says Mayor Todd Gloria.
