Jerry Brown has made it a priority to create as many affordable housing units as he can in the state, and the latest round of funding will go to six such projects in San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Obispo Tribune reports.
The $19.4 million grant from the state's Department of Housing Community Development will go to People's Self-Help Housing, one of the region's largest affordable housing providers.
The organization will use the money to buy and convert six existing Motel 6 units into affordable housing for low-income residents.
The project is one of 35 that has received $736 million in state funding since the third round of the "Homekey" program, which Brown says is a "national model for rapidly creating affordable housing for Californians in need."
