When Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying died last year at the age of 69, he left behind what the South China Morning Post calls "the world's most valuable private foundation."
The Shaw Foundation, founded by actor and director Paul Chan, aims to improve the lives of Hong Kong residents through science, technology, arts, and culture, among other things.
The foundation's five "pillars" include education, health care, community development, and fundraising, per a press release.
"In a similar development, we have partnered with various organizations for development development beyond offering immediate financial help," Chan says.
Among the foundation's efforts: funding research into how Hong Kong could cope better with a new virus breaking out, as well as providing education for young people "to nurture wellrounded talent for Hong Kong prepare for challenges and opportunities," the release notes.
