Super Battle on Impact Investing and Returns

A new campaign in Australia is urging the country's $122 billion super fund industry to invest in projects that make a positive social and environmental impact.

The #5by25 campaign, led by Wealth of Nations Advisors, aims to get 5% of super fund assets invested in projects that deliver measurable social and environmental benefits.

"We believe that impact investing can be a powerful tool to address the social and environmental challenges we face at home and abroad," Uwe Fuehrer, CEO of Wealth of Nations Advisors, says in a statement, per the Sydney Morning Herald.

But some Australian super funds are balking at the idea, saying projects like affordable housing or the energy transition aren't covered by their mandates, per the Australian Financial Review.

The government's impact investing review found that 13.4% of Australians are living below the poverty line as of December 2022, and more than a third of Australians would sacrifice super returns if it means supporting greater climate action.
