The Australian state of Queensland is known for its sunshine, wine, and...
psychiatrists? The state is also home to the country's highest suicide rate and the country's longest waiting time to see a psychiatrist, per a press release from the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.
That's why the institute is among the recipients of $9 million in funding awarded to 10 projects in the state in 2024, including one that will use 3D concrete printing to create "low-carbon, sustainable, and fire-resistant solutions to improve protection of housing and buildings in bushfire-prone areas," the release notes.
The other projects include one that will monitor the quality and quantity of Queensland's precious water resources, as well as run a pilot program to address the pervasive issue of PFAS recycling, aquaculture, renewable energies, and flood mitigation.
"While this is an industry-identified problem being felt across Australia, waiting times to see a psychiatrist in Queensland currently exceed three months across most of a state whose population of people experiencing mental illness significantly exceeds the national average," says QIMR Berghofer's director.
