The US Virgin Islands' Old Barracks was built in the early 1800s as a military barracks, but it's long since been forgottenuntil now.
The Virgin Islands Architecture Center for Built Heritage and Crafts has been awarded $200,000 from the Mellon Foundation to develop the historic site into an educational center that will focus on architecture, historic preservation, and the preservation of buildings, the Houston Chronicle reports.
"This, according to our business plan, creates a cultural center in Christiansted that can become an attraction for residents and visitors as well," says board chair Mary Dema.
The center will offer training in historic preservation, building trades, cultural heritage preservation and tourism, and cultural and historic preservation entrepreneurship, per a press release.
The Old Barracks was home to the US Navy's USS Missouri, which was destroyed in World War I, the Chronicle notes.
