Housing for Kids Hosts Rare Estate Sale to Mitigate Housing Insecurity

In Monterey County, Calif., more than 11,300 school-aged students are homeless in the coming school year.

That's the equivalent of more than one-third of the population of Carmel, Calif., where a group is holding a charity estate sale to help those in need, KSBW reports.

"We have learned that homelessness is the number one cause of students' failure to graduate, and those without a high school diploma are 3.5 times more likely to experience homelessness in the future," says Sandra Leader, a founding member of the Housing for Kids Fund of the Community Foundation for Monterey County.

"We knew we needed to do something."

The estate sale, which runs through the end of the month, is being held in partnership with the Center for Spiritual Awakening.

The Hickerson estate is donating its estate to the sale, as is the estate of the late Susie Franklin, the founder of the Franklin Legacy Fund.

Her husband, Charly Franklin, has donated collectible teapots signed by British artist Paul Cardew.

"Having previously been a resident of this community for 25 years, it means a lot to [Glenn and Cheryl] Hickerson to have an opportunity to benefit local organizations, particularly on behalf of the needs of children," says Cheryl Hicker
