The McKenna Foundation has given more than $600,000 to 12 Texas nonprofit organizations over the last few years to help with basic needs such as food, housing, and workforce and job training, the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung reports.
"Not only are they serving people, but they are really taking the time to understand the people that they're serving, learn more about their needs, and really fulfill those needs in a comprehensive way," says the foundation's CEO.
Among the recipients of this year's grants: The Community Resource and Recreation Center in Canyon Lake received $65,000 to provide rural community support and address local residents' challenges.Provisions Outreach, a Bulverde-area food pantry, received a $10,000 grant.
The client-choice pantry plans to use the money to buy food and supplies for the community and to distribute 32,000 pounds of food each month, per the McKenna Foundation.
The Hope Center in Spring Branch received $15,000 for its Feed My Sheep initiative.
The pantry assists more than 4,000 family members in Comal County every year.
Half of the $40,000 grant is allocated for pantry operations, and the rest of the money will finance a box truck that is crucial for weekly food collections.
