"At its heart, Motor City Match is about building stronger communities."
That's Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan's take on the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation's Motor City Match program, which has awarded more than $1 million in grants to 16 new businesses in its 27th round, the Detroit Free Press reports.
The businesses include a dental care office, a luxury spa, a pair of restaurants, and a digital photography studio.
95% of the businesses are minority-owned; 41% are women-owned; and 84% of the businesses are owned by Detroit residents, the Detroit News reports.
The grants were awarded through the program's Community Violence Intervention track, which offers $75,000 in grants and assistance to four businesses led by individuals committed to positive change.
"With the CVI track, we're breaking new ground in how we approach economic development," Detroit Economic Growth Corporation President and CEO Kevin Johnson says.
