The city of LaCrosse, Wis., is using solar power to power its police and fire stations, as well as affordable housing, thanks to a $1 million grant from the federal government, the LaCrosse Times reports.
The grant, awarded to the city by the US Department of Energy's Office of Energy Innovation, will go toward the installation of 2 megawatts of solar panels on city facilities.
The panels will produce an estimated 561,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy per year, reducing the energy cost for both the city and its Truax Housing Complex residents, according to a press release.
"This grant funding allows us to achieve our sustainability goals and advance environmental justice while saving City dollars," LaCrosse Mayor Thomas DiGiulio said in a statement.
