"The city of Spokane is a leading example for how communities can respond to the housing crisis," says Washington Gov.

Jay Inslee in praising the city for its efforts to create more affordable housing.

The governor's office has named Spokane the winner of the 2023 "Smart Housing" award for its "Jump Starting More Housing Opportunities" program, which allows for up to four new homes on a single lot in certain areas of the city, reports the Spokesman-Review.

Washington passed a law last year requiring cities to have a plan to create more affordable housing, and Spokane was one of the first to put one in place, per a release.

"We celebrate Spokane's accomplishment as proof more communities can go on housing," says Inslee.

The other winners in the housing category were the city of Waitsburg in the "Smart Project" category, and the town of Winthrop in the "Small City" category.
