Google is teaming up with Rice University to create a Houston-area startup accelerator, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The accelerator will focus on the "Internet of Things," with a particular focus on driverless cars.

According to a press release, it's part of Google's "Made in Houston" initiative, which aims to bring together "the best and the brightest from the local, state, and federal communities to create the next generation of Houston-based technology companies."

The accelerator will launch in April, with the first cohort of 30 startups set to start work in May, the Chronicle reports.

According to the press release, Google's role in the accelerator will be to "accelerate local innovation in the areas of Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, robotics, and machine learning," as well as to "support local entrepreneurs in their efforts to build the next generation of Houston-based technology companies."

Google's role in the accelerator isn't entirely new, the Chronicle reports.

The company was one of the first to partner with Rice on a similar accelerator in 2012, according to a press release.
